Time slip
From The Kim Stanley Robinson Encyclopedia
The time slip is term used to describe the extra thirty-nine minutes and thirty seconds gap in-between 12:00 AM and 12:01 AM. A standard Martian day is thirty-nine and a half minutes longer than the standard 24 hour Terran day. To reconcile this, all Martian clocks are programmed to stop at Midnight and do not resume counting until the 39.5 minute difference has passed. The time slip holds a special place in Martian culture, often the time of celebration and partying as many consider it being 'outside of time' and free to do what normally isn't possible or allowed.
Related Info
The term timeslip is a reference to Philip K. Dick's novel The Martian Timeslip. That novel dealt with Martian colonists and their varying perceptions of time, presented in the trippy, schizophrenic way that only PKD can bring you.
