Ambiguous writing?

From Blue Mars, Zo's POV:
She went to the changing room and dressed, went outside. It was morning, the sun bright over the bare plains of Lunae. She flowed through the empty streets to her hostel, feeling relaxed and clean and sleepy. A big breakfast, fall into bed, delicious sleep.
But there in the hostel restaurant was Jackie. “If it isn’t our Zoya.” She had always hated the name, which Zo had chosen for herself.
Zo, surprised, said, “Did you follow me here?”

What do you suppose the bolded section means?

  • Who hates the name, Jackie or Zo?
  • She hates 'Zoya' right?
  • And which name had she chosen for herself, Zoya?

I'm sure we can get some meaning out of this, but it just seems awfully shonky writing at this point. I figure that Zo chose the name 'Zoya' for herself, which Jackie hated, but it could also mean that Zo had chosen 'Zo' for herself instead of her designated 'Zoya', because Zo hated 'Zoya'. Grrr, which is is??? Carlos 04:47, 18 October 2006 (MDT)

Birth: Cairo?

I've noted Zo's place of birth as Cairo, although I can't find an explicit reference. I'm working on the assumption that Jackie was based in Cairo for the duration of the GEC water dispute while pregnant, and that she is still there when Nirgal visits and she has the baby. Is this reasonable? Or do we need to footnote implied information like this? I'd rather not just leave a blank when we can be 90% sure that something is the case. Carlos 06:16, 18 October 2006 (MDT)

I've created a template for referencing this kind of implied info. Do you think this is a good approach? Carlos 17:45, 18 October 2006 (MDT)
