Early Life
Sax was born in Boulder, Colorado in the United States. Sax holds a PhD in physics.
Antarctica and The Ares
Sax along with many of Earth's greatest scientists were housed in an Antartica station as a test for the colonization of Mars. It is while at the Antarctica station he and Ann Clayborne experience a fleeting romantic moment. This moment causes Ann and Sax to have a rollercoaster relationship that lasts the rest of their lives.
During the trip to Mars aboard the Ares all of the other of the First Hundred confess to bending the truth or lying on Michel Duval psychiatric evaluation questionnaires, Sax is the only one who answers with complete honesty that he didn't. This demonstrates a fundamental part of Sax's character, he is superficially exactly what he appears and likewise takes most things at face value.
During the trip to Mars, Sax begins his lengthy, life-long debate with Ann Clayborne. This begins the great political and moral divide on Mars, the Greens (lead by Sax), and the Reds (lead by Ann).
Underhill
While at Underhill Sax surrounds himself with a group that believe they should make an impact on Mars and draw out a new form of life, principle among these people is Hiroko Ai. Early into the settlement Sax along with Hiroko to create windmills filled with algae designed to survive on Mars. The controversy explodes and creates dramatic ramifications. Sax is critical in the survival of the Underhill group by being intrumental in helping to establish the infrastructure (harvesting raw resources, generating power) to support the colony.
