Rickover

From The Kim Stanley Robinson Encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

Rickover is the a type of nuclear fission reactor developed by the United States Navy for use by the First Hundred on Mars. Arkady Bogdanov was the most vocal against using the reactors, but the need for a greater energy supply and lack of another readily available source overrode any concerns of potential danger. Hiroko's hidden colony was eventually able to build their own Rickover, presumably with spare and stolen parts from the public colonies.

Related Info

Currently there is no nuclear reactor produced by the US Navy or anyone else named Rickover. Currently, all US Navy reactors are designated by three characters representing the ship class, generation number, and manufacturer. Presumably, the Mars trilogy Rickover would have been named after Admiral Hyman G. Rickover, who is commonly known as the Father of the Nuclear Navy for his efforts to establish nuclear marine propulsion in Navy ships.
