Maya Katerina Toitovna came to Mars as the Russian Contingent Co-ordinator of the first hundred colonists.

Background

Maya grew up living in a one-room apartment with her mother, who was a doctor. Her mother was slightly involved in space medical research and planted the idea in Maya’s head that cosmonautics was going to need an influx of women, even if only to provide female data in medical experiments.

After studying aeronautic engineering at Moscow University, Maya was accepted to the cosmonaut program at Baikonur, where she began to build a reputation. On assignment to the Novy Mir space station, she redesigned the interior for improved ergonomic efficiency. Later, during a year in command of the station, she further advanced her reputation by dealing with multiple emergency repairs. She also spent time on Novy Mir with Nadia Cherneshevsky, who she had met in Baikonur, and Yeli Zudov, another future member of the first hundred colonists on Mars.

Having climbed her way to administrative positions, Maya no longer relied on her leadership abilities alone in penetrating the Glavkosmos power strucuture. She began to use her sexuality to manipulate men in powerful positions and play them against each other strategically, a method she would continue to employ later on Mars. In the process she married once and divorced.
