Book/short story titles
The titles of books should always be italicized. However, short stories and novellas should be kept in plain text and enclosed in double-quotes. All titles should follow standard captilization rules. (link required)
Examples
- Novels: Red Mars, Forty Signs of Rain
- Short stories and novellas: "The Blind Geometer", "Vinland the Dream"
Naming of the Mars trilogy
The Mars trilogy should always be named with only the word Mars italicized and capitalized. This is because the term trilogy is only a descriptor and not part of the title proper. The exception is when the full term is used as part of a heading, whereby standard capitalization rules apply, so Trilogy would be capitalized. Similarly the term The Mars Trilogy Encyclopedia should all be capitalized as the whole terms is the name of a major section of our site. Be careful, therefore, when creating links to the trilogy homepage or article, as you will have to use very specific wiki markup to ensure only the appropriate parts are linked and italicized:
- A link to the Mars trilogy. Note that the the is not part of the link.
Wiki markup:Mars trilogy
- The Mars Trilogy Encyclopedia. A heading, and link to the trilogy homepage.
Wiki markup:The Mars Trilogy Encyclopedia
Names of ships, vessels, etc.
Standard convention applies, but it requires pointing out if you are going to be referring to the Ares a lot. Note that the ship name Ares requires italics and linkification (but not the the), but that the article is called The Ares. Therefore the required wiki markup for referring to the ship is:
the Ares
