canon

In narrative fiction, canon refers to the group of works that are considered to be authorative, or official, sources for describing the reality within the fictional universe. For example, in the Mars trilogy, the main titles Red Mars, Green Mars and Blue Mars are considered part of the official canon, whereas the companion volume The Martians is not because it contains stories that are set in alternative versions of the main fictional reality.
